Crotone is a very modern southern Italian town, a business and tourism centre which enjoys an advanced and fertile agriculture however once upon a time it was a major reference point of Magna Graecia history and culture. Situated on a low promontory on the Ionian Sea, between the rivers Neto and Tacina, a short distance north of Capo Colonna, it is now a small, modern city, saved from its mostly utilitarian atmosphere by the changeable colours of the ancient waters next to which it sits and by the parched, sunlit planes behind.

The harbor in Crotone is mainly used fishermen and Mediterranean yachtsman alike which is then surrounded by long, easy beaches that stretch-out on either side of the town itself, and a few very interesting architectural works, including the ruins of two medieval castles and their surrounding fortifications. One, the Castella Aroganese (1541), stands where the Greek acropolis would have been, and the other, a Norman castle, sits on an islet by the shore.

All in all, Crotone is a true cosmopolitan city because it offers travelers an unhurried ambience, and an opportunity to connect the present to the long ago, when Crotone, along with many other points along the Ionian Coast were settled by Greeks.

CAPO COLONNA
A worthwhile excursion from Crotone is to the famed column at Capo Colonna on Calabria's extreme eastern point, for which you have to drive or walk 11 km. along the coast. The column is a solitary remnant of a vast structure which served as the temple for all the Greeks in Calabria.

CAPO RIZZUTO
Riserva Naturale Marina "Capo Rizzuto" covers an area of about 14,721 hectares and extends itself for 40 kms of coast. The Protected Marine Area consists of eight promontories: the first one is that of Capo colonna, with the temple dedicated to the goddess Hera Lacinia, while the last one is Le Castella. It is a stretch of Mediterranean Sea characterized by the variety of natural environments and by the particular geomorphology of the coast. In 1982 this area, which is considered of particular environmental interest, was placed among the 21 protected areas or reserves to be created in Italy. And finally, on 27th December 1991 the Riserva Naturale Marina "Capo Rizzuto" has been established: from Capo Colonna to Barco Vercillo.

TRADITIONAL EVENTS
The most traditional feasts in Crotone are two. The first one is the Feast of the Madonna of Capocolonna that takes place in spring. The second one is the Feast of Magna Graecia that takes place in summer. However, the hinterland of Crotone is rich in traditions. The Upper Ionian of Crotone, in fact, gives hospitality to the Albanian community of Pallagorio, S. Nicola del’ Alto and Carfizzi, where year by year old religious rites and arbereshe events are repeated.

FOOD & WINE
Crotone is at the same time a seaside and agricultural town. These two aspects interlace and produce ex¬clusive gastronomic specialties such as the Mustica or the Sardella bottled in oil and hot pepper and other spices. In Crotone and along the coast, fish cooked in several ways is a main course. The “Cavatelli”, a kind of homemade “orecchictte” seasoned with gravy and grated ripe cheese, are a characteristic and tasty dish. Crotone and its neighborhood are rich in vines of noble and old origins, the wines produced are well known all over the world. They are Ciro and Melissa, two inimitable red wines, sweet-smelling and strong table wines. Ciro has two variations: the rose and the white wine. Ciro, the gods' wine, was offered after the Olympic Games to the winners. Among the sweets, we must remember the “pitta in chiusa”, a puff pastry flavored with wine and filled with walnuts, raisins and candied fruits, pre¬pared like a rose and baked or fried in olive oil.
